Encroaching Winter

Urchin, born into beggary
Crawling, lurching
Sad sight utters no sound
nothing around, cursed ground
Faces early morning yawning
and a warning strictly assuring the end

It had been cold for several months now
Long winding winter that splinters any hint of warmth underfoot
Sky a wash of white flakes, as day breaks o’er the valley
Flooded alley (or ginnell, they say) muddy, unsafe, holds pedestrians at bay
Who says that in dark chambers do not await devils of eternal winter?
That splinters any hint of warmth from underfoot
