On Happiness (or the one that didn’t win the printexpress.co.uk poetry competition)

There is no easy way to say, my friend

that the way you feel today will end

Without impetus and input from you

and from those upon whom you depend

For happiness is the revolution of the soul

Revolutions come in many different guises

And from a multitude of people wearing varying disguises

But not without the build-up of pressure

from which the desire to change inevitably rises

For happiness is the revolution of the soul

Products and bills and political huff and puff

The constant messages that you don’t look good enough

And the rejections for a new job with more pay

that say you just aren’t made of the right stuff

Come to nought, for happiness is the revolution of the soul

Courage to defend requires something worth defending

And though the siege on your senses seems almost never ending

as your voice seemingly blending into the background

of white noise emitting from whatever is currently trending

Remember: happiness is the revolution of the soul

The soul as a whole is a blank canvas ready to be painted gold

by those who remember that fortune favours the bold

Any who try know how tempting it can be

to just go with the flow and let your strength fold

If we don’t keep in mind that happiness is the revolution of the soul

So think upon these words but remember to act

Consider your qualities and make an internal pact

to travel, explore, learn and enquire. Question everything

around you and remember the fact

That happiness, my friend, is the revolution of the soul.
